Are Used Appliances a Better Value (for your wallet and for the planet)

With online shopping sites like Amazon Prime making it easier than ever to buy cheap new products with just the click of a button, it can be tempting to buy new appliances when your old ones break. But are used appliances a better value?

According to a report from the United Nations University, about 60 percent of electronic waste comes from home appliances, including everything from washers and dryers to small appliances like electric shavers. (See that report here).

Here are three reasons to reconsider those new appliances and consider buying used ones.

1. Many Cheap New Appliances are Essentially Disposable

Do you ever see a deal for a fancy new product and wonder, “How on earth can they be selling that for so cheap?”

The answer: it’s so cheap because the product cost very little to make, usually because the materials and the labor are cheap. If you’re finding a new home appliance for a price that seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Most of these products are made in China and there are very few (if any) quality control restrictions in place. This means that your product is very likely to break or wear out in time, and when it does there will be no easy way to have it warrantied or repaired.

If you’re shopping on a budget, you’re much better off buying a high-quality appliance that is slightly used (see our favorite used brands here) rather than a new one of unknown quality.

Invest your money in something that will perform well and stand the test of time rather than something that’s new but shoddily made.

2. Products that Aren’t made to Last Create Tons of Waste

People buy poorly-made products knowing that when the product breaks they can easily and inexpensively replace it with another cheap product of the same quality.

It seems obvious that this approach is flawed because the cost will eventually add up to way more than just buying a good product the first time around, but when your budget is tight it may be the only solution.

The problem is that it’s also terrible for the planet because it creates tons of waste. Most home appliances are made up mostly of metal and plastic parts. When these end up in landfills they become permanent fixtures, which is bad for the planet. When you buy quality products that last a long time and can be repaired even if they do eventually break, you’re not just saving money, you’re also helping reduce waste and helping our planet!

So, are used appliances a better value?  In terms of your carbon footprint…yes!

3. You Can Find Great Deals on Used Appliances

The most convincing reason I can offer as to why you should buy used appliances is simply that used appliances are a better value!

Used appliance stores often carry appliances that are almost new, and they sell them for a fraction of the retail price. Some used appliance stores even carry brand new products that they sell at majorly discounted rates because of minor cosmetic flaws or manufacturing mistakes that don’t affect the performance of the appliance in any way. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if used appliances are a better value, but if you do your research and look for trusted brands and highly-rated products that are used, you can save a lot of money.
